Sodium hyaluronate in a 1% solution (Healon) mixed with a few drops of 2% fluorescein has been found to be useful in exposing the lumen of the lacrimal sac at the time of dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. Injection of the solution into the sac facilitates proper opening and allows accurate identification of the edges of the sac flaps. This technique is especially valuable when the sac is small or when previous DCR surgery was unsuccessful.
