The most revolutionary innovation in reconstructive surgery of the past decade is the development of the musculocutaneous flaps. These flaps permit the reconstruction of large head and neck defects in one stage. They carry an excellent reliable blood supply and the inclusion of the underlying muscle adds sorely needed bulk to the resected area.
