Eighty-four of 132 patients with clinically genuine cranial arteritis had histological evidence of inflammation at temporal artery biopsy. The highest incidence of a positive result (82%) was in patients biopsied before corticosteroid therapy. The figure fell to 60% if corticosteroids had been given for less than a week before biopsy and 10% thereafter.

132例临床确诊为颅动脉炎的患者中，84例在颞动脉活检时有炎症的组织学证据。活检结果为阳性的最高发生率（82%）出现在接受皮质类固醇治疗前进行活检的患者中。如果在活检前给予皮质类固醇治疗少于一周，这一数字降至60%，之后则降至10%。
