What are the motives, what effects must be considered when voluntary sterilization is undertaken for reasons of family planning? About 70 psychological/psychiatric serial follow-up histories available are evaluated. The prognosis, psychic consequences and side effects of the operation are discussed. It is shown that the psychological prognosis can be markedly improved by a well-considered decision following a thorough explanation.
