Whereas a spontaneous rupture of the quadriceps tendon was seldom observed in earlier times, this injury seems to be occurring more frequently in recent years, a fact which may be explained by the rising average age of the population. Metabolic disturbances, rheumatic diseases, repeated traumata and aging processes can produce a certain disposition to rupture by degenerative changes in tendon tissue. Only very rarely does a trauma directly affecting the tendon come into consideration as the actual cause of the rupture. Early operative treatment of the rupture by suture of the extensor apparatus is unavoidable for restoration of the extensor function. Subsequently temporary immobilization and physiotherapy as soon as possible generally lead to a good result without any essential impairment of function being expected.
