This work deals with a review of the main aspects involved in the practice of tracheostomy which could be considered an easy procedure; however, the fact is that errors are continuously observed when it is indicated or performed; likewise, many mistakes are made during the care of the patient with a tracheostomy. If all this aspects are of importance in the adult, this importance increases in the child because of the great anatomical and physiological differences which always should be kept in mind in order to avoid complications of the procedure.
