Between 1975 and 1981 7 cases of rupture of the uterus were observed at this department with an incidence of 1:1200. In all cases therapy consisted of hysterectomy: There was no maternal death, one child died within 24 hours after delivery. Rupture of the uterus remains a serious complication. Careful attention to risk factors, the avoidance of traumatizing obstetric operations and the judicious use of oxytocics should further reduce the incidence of rupture of the uterus.
