The 'traditional' sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, gonorrhoea and so on) have now been supplemented but not replaced by a 'second generation' including chlamydial infections, trichomoniasis, virus diseases (herpes simplex, hepatitis A and B), and protozoal infections in homosexuals. The results, due to a multiplicity of factors, are at present little short of alarming, but there are hopeful signs.
