Abstract

Measurement of fetal scalp pH can aid in the detection of fetal acidosis. In order to evaluate fetal status further and possibly reduce fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, as well as reduce unnecessary cesarean section, continuous assessment of fetal pH is being investigated. Discussion of a six-month experience with a continuous + pH scalp electrode and monitor is presented, together with results of the limited study, as well as specific nursing action appropriate to an invasive method of research.
