Studies were conducted into antigenic variability, the most characteristic and unique parameter of influenza virus, with particular attention being given to its dependence on and correlations with virus structure, virus polypeptides, and antigenic components of the envelope. Emphasis was laid on major phases of the replication cycle, such as the phenomena of drift and shift as well as their possible mechanisms and epidemiological bearings.
