As adolescents develop their sexual identities they are at risk for acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and cervical dysplasia. As physical growth and development progress during adolescence, the risk of developing dysmenoorhea or adverse effects from exposure to diethylstilbestrol increase. The pediatrician with a background in growth and development should be capable of recognizing these conditions and participating in their management.
