Abstract
A description is given of the development of early charitable eye and ear hospitals in Melbourne, and some of the difficulties that had to be overcome. The infirmary founded in 1863 by Andrew Sexton Gray grew in strength to become The Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Vicissitudes of accommodation centred around a house at 101 (157) Spring Street, originally built for Dr W. M. Turnbull, an obstetrician.
