Abstract

This article deals with the dental management of patients with surgically corrected cardiac and vascular disease. The emphasis of the report is on the susceptibility of these patients to bacterial endocarditis or endarteritis and the prevention of these diseases in the susceptible patient receiving dental treatment. The author would strongly encourage the medical and dental professions to work together in the management of these patients. The dentist must seek medical consultation prior to rendering dental care, and the physician is encouraged to seek dental consultation and treatment for the patient who is going to receive a prosthetic heart valve or is a candidate for heart transplantation.
