The optical immunofluorescence technique was used to examine endocervical tissue samples taken from 74 patients with gonorrhoea. Local plasma cells were increased, with immunoglobulin-A forming cells being predominant. Immunoglobulin-G forming cells were increased, too, but immunoglobulin-M positive cells were scarce. Complement deposits were recorded interstitially, most of them close to the basal membrane. Intraleucocytic and extraleucocytic gonococci were detected, depending on stages of the disease.
