The concept of two interacting constituents involved in the redistribution of the circulating blood volume in orthostasis -- redistribution along the vertical (hydrostatic) and functional (metabolic) gradients -- is discussed. On this basis the possible mechanism responsible for orthostatic circulatory intolerance following an exposure to bed rest or weightlessness is described.
