I designed an irrigated biconcave contact lens that allows a large portion of the retina to be examined in a single field of vision. Displacement of the contact lens on the cornea brings into view peripheral parts of the retina that could otherwise be seen only by extreme rotation of the globe. The gimbal connection of the contact lens to its handle permits the surgical assistant to hold the handle in any position without affecting the plane and attitude of the contact lens relative to the cornea.
