Abstract
Some aspects of the use of anticoagulants to prevent or treat thromboembolic disorders remain controversial after more than 40 years of clinical trial and experience. This review describes the mode of action of heparin and the oral anticoagulants and examines their practical use for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism.
