Rheumatoid synovitis or pannus formation is chiefly responsible for pain, joint destruction, and eventual erosion in patients afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. Synovectomy is a nondestructive means of arresting this inflammatory process in the rheumatoid ankle. The technique of ankle synovectomy is described.
