Assessment centres have become a prominent feature of paediatrics in the United Kingdom. Staffed by a developmental paediatrician and a team of medical and paramedical workers they are valuable for the diagnosis and coordination of management of handicapping conditions in childhood. Both local and regional assessment centres should be established. In the first instance these should be in conjunction with teaching children's hospitals in major cities in Australia.
