[Clinical value of endoscopic papillotomy].

Endoscopic papillotomy (EPT), which has been developed from retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) is without any doubt the most spectacular procedure among the various methods of operative endoscopy. Worldwide experience shows that with the necessary know-how, which is an essential condition, it is a highly successful procedure with encouraging results. EPT is, however, still the method in operative endoscopy with the highest complication rate. Therefore it should only be performed by strictly taking into account the indications. Moreover it should be a prerequisite that an experienced surgeon is at hand who can intervene immediately when complications occur.
