Having seen a series of 64 ruptures of the uterus, the author has analysed the reasons for the relative frequency of this dreaded complication in Black Africa (10% or patients had Caesarean sections in the same period. Inadequate medical attention and obstetrical superivision and dehiscence of the uterus because of the still frequently practised procedure of hysterotomy through the uterine body seem to be the principal factors responsible for these ruptures, which still cause heavy mortality (fetal 93%. maternal 17%).
