In traumatology computed tomography has mainly been used in the treatment of polytraumatized and seriously injured patients. Most important is the diagnosis and localization of intracranial haemorrhage and other tissue damage. The desired safety level has not yet been achieved, even using invasive measures. CT is also very useful in the diagnosis of abdominal and intrathoracic injuries. Haemorrhages and injuries in the parenchymatous and retroperitoneal areas are most frequent. In skeletal injuries and those of the extremities, CT can also be of value, particularly when the efficacy of conventional radiography is restricted by shadows.
