The late clinical complications subsequent to cardiac valvular surgery were studied in 150 patients in a period covering from January 1976, to December 1981. Mechanical prosthesis were used in 99 patients and biological in 51. Mortality, thromboembolic events, and haemorrhages, were all considerably higher in patients submitted to mechanical than biological prosthesis, whereas the periprosthetic leaks were more often observed in cases with biological prosthesis. With regard to other complications, such as infectious endocarditis, postperfusion and postpericardiotomy syndromes, etc., as well as the surgery definitive results, appreciable differences were not found. This, we can conclude that any of all now available prosthesis, is free of complications, and the election of a particular prosthesis (mechanical or biological) must probably be individualized for each particular patient.
1976年1月至1981年12月期间，对150例心脏瓣膜手术患者的晚期临床并发症进行了研究。99例患者使用了机械瓣膜，51例使用了生物瓣膜。接受机械瓣膜置换的患者的死亡率、血栓栓塞事件和出血发生率均明显高于接受生物瓣膜置换的患者，而生物瓣膜置换患者更常出现人工瓣膜周漏。关于其他并发症，如感染性心内膜炎、灌注后和心包切开术后综合征等，以及手术最终结果，未发现明显差异。因此，我们可以得出结论，目前所有可用的瓣膜都存在并发症，特定瓣膜（机械瓣膜或生物瓣膜）的选择可能必须针对每个特定患者进行个体化。
