A brief discussion of etiology and diagnosis of chronic ankle instability precedes results of a follow-up study of a modified Evans procedure. Between 1974 and 1980, 29 patients with chronic ankle instability were operated on at Harrison Community Hospital. Of the patients who replied to the follow-up study, 75% reported good functional stability. Assessment of surgical results was 62.5% excellent, 25% good, 6.25% satisfactory, and 6.25% poor.
