A new percutaneous balloon is described which permits the rapid institution of IABP support and simplified balloon removal. This new balloon was employed in 21 patients with 18 (86%) patients surviving. Percutaneous intra-aortic balloon pumping may broaden the medical and surgical applications of intra-aortic balloon pumping.
