Intravasation of barium sulphate during roentgenography of the Colon. Case Report.

This review presents the case history of a 67-year-old man, referred to hospital with severe ulcerative colitis. Treatment at home with prednisolone enemas had had very poor results. Coloscopy revealed large proctitis ulcerations with two polyps. Pathological anatomical examination: severe colitis, probably ulcerations. Intravasation of barium sulphate into the venous system occurred during roentgenography of the colon. Cardiac arrest occurred, and irreversible brain lesions developed.
