The penetration of a pseudophakic eye by a high-speed metallic foreign body is reported. The path of the steel missile was interrupted by the intraocular lens, which was fixed within the capsular remnant, preventing missile penetration into the posterior segment. Although the foreign body was removed from the anterior chamber without immediate sequelae, several months later a peripheral retinal detachment occurred. Prompt recognition and treatment resulted in the retention of excellent pseudophakic vision. The importance of postoperative protective eyewear is emphasized.
