This article presents data from the 1970 U.S. Census Public Use Sample on occupational mobility patterns and labor force separations for health occupations. Turnover among health workers is significantly lower than in the labor force in general. Occupations with the strongest occupational attachment are those predominately male occupations that require the heaviest investment in training. Those with the highest attrition rate are traditionally female occupations that require relatively few skills and are often viewed as entry points for possible upward mobility.
