The family physician has the unique opportunity to evaluate suicidal ideas, behavior and risk by using his demographic and medical knowledge, applying interview skills and involving the family and friends in the initial assessment. Having made an intelligent and complete assessment of the suicide threat, he can then select the most appropriate management for his patient, constantly keeping in mind the need to reevaluate for suicide risk at frequent intervals.
