Renal vein varices are abnormalities known to be responsible for intermittent hematuria, but may be found in patients with no history of bleeding. Diagnosis is suggested by characteristic changes on a drip infusion pyelogram and retrograde pyelogram and is made by renal venography done seconds after the injection of epinephrine into the ipsilateral renal artery.
