Evaluation of the hemorrhage-prone patient requires a careful history, attention to pertinent physical findings, and discretionary use of the laboratory. With a basic understanding of normal hemostatic mechanisms, the clinician can choose coagulation tests appropriate to the situation. The pattern of test abnormalities provides clues to where in the hemostatic process the disturbance is located.
