This article describes the integration of an assertion training component into an overall treatment program for alcoholism on an inpatient unit. The usefulness of assertion training is delineated, particularly with regard to relapse prevention. Specific techniques that work well with an alcoholic population are described. Suggestions for the staffing of an assertion training group are made.
