To date, a number of specific materials have been used for extended wear lenses in aphakia. While none of the materials are ideal, reasonable results have been achieved with three types of materials: thin hydrophilics, silicone, and high water content hydrophilics. The various available lenses are described, and their physical properties are related to the process of extended wear. The authors' techniques for fitting, follow-up, evaluation, and prevention of complications are presented.
