Comparative data on isolation and identification of parvalbumins from muscles of the lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis and carp Cyprinus carpio are presented. No parvalbumins or some other soluble low molecular weight sarcoplasmic calcium-binding proteins were detected in the lamprey, while 4 pure fractions of parvalbumins were obtained from carp muscles. These data imply that cyclostomes do not need additional calcium regulation of the activity of fast skeletal muscles by parvalbumins.
