In this overview of the psychiatric disorders and problems associated with alcoholism and alcohol abuse, true psychiatric illness which may account for excessive alcohol use is differentiated from the psychiatric sequelae of chronic alcoholism. This distinction is emphasized because of its important practical implications for treatment.
