The functional condition of the various links of the nonspecific cerebral systems and their role in the pathogenesis of the early stages of hypertensive disease were studied. The results showed that such patients have anxiety-neurotic disorders and sympathetic shifts in the circulatory system. Emotional stress leads to elevation of arterial pressure and prolongation of the initally increased delta-sleep in the structure of night sleep. Analysis of the results disclosed two main psychophysiological types of reaction to emotional stress in patients with hypertensive disease. Elevation of arterial pressure at the expense of the stroke volume is attended by prolongation of the stage of quick sleep on the following night and prolongation of delta-sleep because of peripheral vascular resistance. These types are distinguished according to the psychological characteristics.
