Abstract

The normal level of dry matter, the total fat content and the composition of the fat in the milk of fourteen sows and in the faeces of a number of their 2-3-week-old piglets having been determined, the role of lipids, particularly those in the milk of the sow, in the pathogenesis of steatorrhoea in the piglet, was studied. The study of the milk of fifty sows and faecal samples of their piglets showed that there was no relationship between the lipid content and the composition of the milk fat and the appearance of steatorrhoea. Preliminary trials showed that there also was no relationship between the daily fat intake and the pathogenesis of steatorrhoea. Therefore, steatorrhoea should not be traced to dietary causes but rather to causes in the piglet itself.
