The author considers trends established in the seventies and, on that basis, makes predictions for the future. The question: "What are the essential, critical-to-survival aspects of the services dietitians provide?" is asked. The findings and recommendations of the Study Commission on Dietetics, formed under the joint auspices of The American Dietetic Association and the Kellogg Foundation, are discussed. The need not just to respond to but to anticipate change is stressed.
