The author applied the results of a successful long-term experimental study in dogs by using ureteral prostheses in two patients, one with loss of pelvic ureteral substance after extensive hysterectomy for cancer of the cervix, and the other with loss of sub-pyelic ureteral substance. In the first case the prosthesis joined the iliac ureter to the bladder, and in the second case a lower calyx to the lumbar ureter. Follow-up of both cases after more than 3 years shows that in certain patients, chosen particularly, in whom no other method of ureteral replacement is possible, a ureteral prosthesis in silicone elastomer can be an acceptable procedure which can remain in place for long periods, more than 3 years in the cases reported.
