A recently presented hypothesis, according to which cyclic selection of a specific number of follicles for ovulation is brought about by immune mechanisms, will be discussed critically. The arguments and conclusions within the framework of this hypothesis are either not convincing or even at variance with well established facts. It is questioned whether there is any need for such a dramatic extension of the commonly accepted concept for neuroendocrine control of ovarian function.
