Iodine deficiency, intrathyroidal defects of thyroxine synthesis and morphological defects of the thyroid gland are the causes for connatal hypothyroidism of various degrees. Morphological defects include the most severe forms of cretinism due to aplasia of the gland as well as various more milder forms following application of iodine or antithyroidal drugs to the mother or TSH deficiency of the newborn. Due to general TSH-screening programs, more will be learned about the still not fully understandable etiology of connatal hypothyroidism.
碘缺乏、甲状腺内甲状腺素合成缺陷以及甲状腺形态学缺陷是导致不同程度先天性甲状腺功能减退症的原因。形态学缺陷包括因腺体发育不全导致的最严重的克汀病形式，以及母亲使用碘或抗甲状腺药物后或新生儿促甲状腺激素缺乏导致的各种较轻微形式。由于普遍开展促甲状腺激素筛查项目，对于先天性甲状腺功能减退症仍未完全明了的病因将有更多了解。
