Abstract

The methods of pelvic and perineal drainage and its complications, in 105 cases with proctocolectomy or abdominoperineal resection are analyzed. Those cases with an open perineal wound or partly closed wound using soft or rigid drains showed an average incidence rate of wound infection of 38 per cent (30 to 50 per cent). In the other hand when primary perineal closure and suction drainage were performed, the morbidity rate was 13 per cent. The low incidence of local septic complications diminish the hospitalization time, assure the primary wound healing and there is a low rate of discomfort during the early post-operative period. At the end some technical considerations are made.
