The investigation of haemoglobin S in a sample of Liberian paediatric subjects revealed a relatively low incidence of this haemoglobin variant. There is no significant difference from its incidence in the adult population. The low frequency of haemoglobin S is rather paradoxal since malaria is still endemic in Liberia. Tribal variation has been revealed. Other haemoglobin variants were found to be rare.
