A significant number of eye problems present to the general practitioner. Most of these can be handled without referral to a specialist. This article attempts to give some guidance to the practitioner faced with an ophthalmological problem in the office. Sophisticated equipment is required in very few cases to make a working diagnosis. General practitioners should continue to be involved in primary eye care.
