Abstract
The difficult ethical choice to be made between 'extraordinary' treatment or no treatment is discussed with reference to hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which affects a number of neonates each year. The treatment involves heart transplantation and xenotransplantation, which on their own bring about a host of problems.
