This paper explores the assumptions and the motivation of students undertaking degree and diploma courses. The socio-demographic characteristics are explored in order to illuminate the discussion. The areas covered focus on the students' gender, age, education, reasons for choosing nursing, and expectations of the course. The students undertaking degree courses were further sub-divided into those attending universities running four-year degree courses and 'new universities; (formerly polytechnics) offering three-year degree courses.
