In today's health care atmosphere, cost-containment is viewed as the most important issue. The cost of supplies is second only to the cost of salaries. However, these supplies are needed to adequately care for patients. Often, the decision on which product to buy is based solely on price and not on the performance and quality of the equipment. Nurses have a major obligation to engage in evaluating direct patient care items.
