Clinical and mammographic examination represents the most effective screening method for breast cancer. Self-examination of the breast at monthly intervals, annual physical examination by her physician and mammography in two planes after the age of 40 years is recommended. Results of screening studies conducted in the United States and in Europe in females older than 40 years show reductions in mortality especially if the interval between the screens is reduced, possibly to one year. Other imaging techniques such as thermography and ultrasound have not been found to be effective screening methods. Contrast-enhanced MR imaging of the breast is attracting increasing attention as a new supplementary tool in breast diagnostics. Dedicated units are expensive however and not suitable for stand-alone screening.
