The acquisition and application of knowledge to benefit patients can be one of the most personally gratifying experiences of a medical career. Surgeons are well equipped intellectually and temperamentally to conduct first-rate research. The present research environment will encourage research with potential for early clinical application. Granting agencies, residency program directors, and laboratory and surgical department heads should undertake a concerted effort to encourage and facilitate the training of surgeon scientists.
