Administration of drugs of abuse to human volunteers is an important and valuable clinical research procedure. The College on Problems of Drug Dependence recognizes the value and importance of such research and affirms its position that, with proper care, such research can be conducted safely and ethically. This report describes some of the procedures commonly used in human research with drugs of abuse and addresses some of the issues to be considered by researchers and by review committees to insure that such research has an acceptable risk/benefit ratio.
